Description
Trent Reznor is an American musician, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist known as the founder and frontman of the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails. Atticus Ross is a British musician, composer, and producer. The pair is well-known for their collaborations on film scores and projects outside of Nine Inch Nails. Distancing themselves from the typical music creation process, the two artists started their series of albums Ghosts in 2008. “We began improvising and let the music decide the direction. Eyes were closed, hands played instruments, and it began.”
Ideation phase
In seeking to capture the emotions of hope and togetherness conveyed in the album, multiple sketches were created. The goal was to extrapolate the overall mood of the music. Ultimately, the idea of light in darkness emerged as a fitting symbol.
Creative process
Multiple approaches were taken to create this poster, starting with paint and drawings. The introduction of photography into my process was a game-changer. I captured an image of light passing through two wooden plates and then vectorized it.
The final visual took an illustrative approach, depicting a crack letting light pass through. The background was kept minimal to bring emphasis to the concept. The design was made adaptable to fit different marketing formats for promoting the concert on social media. The visual for the album was created to reflect the design of the poster, ensuring a cohesive look across promotional materials. The same colors were chosen for both. While the album artwork took a more minimal approach, it still conveyed the idea of light coming through layers.

Ghosts V: Together adopts an ambient, meditative style. The overall atmosphere exudes hopefulness and peace, with songs sprawling across the album. The objective of the album is to target an emotional angle and prolong it for as long as possible.
Ambient music is characterized as “instrumental music that accentuates texture, tone, mood, and atmosphere. It does not contain the formal melodies or steady rhythms found in most popular music, opting instead to craft ambience from waves of aural textures.”
